Being a polymath brings substantial insights and advantages in problem solving. But the deep specialists wil fight you on it. When I applied to grad school in systems engineering departments, the scholarship funds looked down and me and warned me: "if you choose to be a generalist in academia, not only will you face a rocky road, but people will pick up those rocks and throw them at you." Turns out that National Science Foundation scholarship interviewer was right. Still, I got the scholarship, became a Ph.D. generalist, then abandonned any hope of a traditional academic career. Fortunately, Substack now offers a tremendous home for well-rounded polymaths.
